Hair Care Tips For A Dry Climate

One of the factors that is commonly overlooked when considering hair care tips is your climate. Climate affects our hair in ways that many of us wouldn’t expect and can often be the deciding factor between flat, frizzy hair and luscious, voluminous locks. But when we are aware of the amount of moisture in the air - or lack thereof - we can better decide what products we need and what routine works best as we begin our day.

What is Considered a Dry Climate?

Dry climates have less precipitation than evaporation. These dry climate zones cover about 26% of the world’s land area. Summers in these areas are hot to very hot and seldom experience rain. Winter days may be cool or warm, and winter nights can be very cold. The most notable trait is the dry air. If you have hair and are living in these areas, then we are preaching to your choir. But don’t worry, there’s help.

For those of us who live in these drier climates, it boils down to trying to keep moisture in our hair and avoiding damage from the sun. With a lack of moisture in our hair, it can become that much harder to manage our flat, frizzy hair and to stop our scalp from drying out. But not to worry. We’ve come up with a handful of strategies to keep your hair voluminous and luscious in even the driest of climates.

Make Sure to Moisturize.

Like I mentioned, dry heat loves to zap the moisture out of your hair. If you don’t moisturize your hair enough during the week, by the end of it, you won’t have any moisture left in it.

Make sure that you shampoo and condition your hair 3-4 times a week. There are plenty of YouTube hair care gurus that swear by using conditioner just once a week. But chances are that those gurus live in a much more humid environment than you. For those of you living in the desert or high mountains, we have to be a lot more persistent with adding moisture to our hair. While using shampoo and conditioner every day is almost never a good idea, using products for about half of the days of the week helps to lock in moisture.

Also consider using a moisturizing masque once a week. Masques help to lock in moisture for longer periods of time as well as help repair damaged hair. Reviv3 has a fantastic, protein-rich masque free of those harsh chemicals that often work to dry out and damage your hair.

Avoid Blow-Dryers.

The last thing you need in a dry and hot environment is more heat. Using a blow-dryer in the morning instead of letting your hair dry on its own just takes that much more moisture away. Instead, do your best to dab your hair dry with a towel or use a softer cloth like cotton from a t-shirt. This will help to keep your hair moisturized and reduce the amount of frizz in your hair.

However, if you must use a blow-dryer, take a few additional steps to reduce the negative effects from the dry heat. Keep the dryer at least six inches away from your head, use the “cool” setting and don’t concentrate the hot air on an area of your head for more than 10 seconds.

Consider Buying a Humidifier.

Using a humidifier in your room while you sleep has a number of benefits to it. The main benefit that we are after here is that it will help your hair maintain and keep its moisture in the night. But a humidifier will also help your skin to stay moisturized as well as help to alleviate seasonal allergies.

Use UV Protection Sprays.

Just like our skin, our hair can become damaged and dry from the sun and its ultraviolet rays. Reviv3 has a great product for this form of protection. Not only does it protect from UV rays and heating tools, but it is also free of alcohol and other harsh chemicals. It also beats wearing a hat or using “hair sunscreen” with chemicals that claim to offer similar protection from the sun.

Use Oils Daily.

Like certain types of moisturizers, oils can help lock in moisture and help to keep your hair saturated throughout the day. Most oils are most effective when they are applied during your morning routine, helping to keep moisture from drying out. But other oils, like argan oil, can be applied at night, helping to maintain moisture while you sleep. Pair that with your humidifier and you should have luscious locks before you even hit the shower.

So, if you find yourself living in a drier climate - or are even just going to be visiting one for a while - consider using these hair care tips. They should help keep your hair from drying out and taking on too much frizz.
